The Standby Guy

IMG_3654
I’ve flown several times on a standby ticket, and I’m always cool with being bumped as long as the airport has free wifi and at least three dining options.

But there’s always the one guy or gal in there who can’t believe they weren’t able to get on the flight. They curse out the gate agent, utter words about having to be at a funeral in a few hours and storm off to sit alone at a gate that just boarded.

Here are a few tips if you have a standby flight:

  1. 1. Pack plenty of snacks, or enough money to eat two or three meals.
  2. Be flexible. If you’re flying into Orlando, and all the flights look full, ask about a flight to Tampa and tell your friend to pick you up there, or hop a bus, or hop on craigslist and look for a rideshare.
  3. Never curse out the gate agent. You will need them in the near future. I’ve been upgraded to first class, put on flights to neighboring, sometimes closer cities, and even given a few numbers (always think about future travel).

I’m just saying.
